The Swedes mean business, quite literally. Volvo's performance/tuning arm, Polestar is now a separate entity. The manufacturer says that the new brand will be focused towards being an "electrified global high-performance company".
Polestar has been tinkering with Volvos since twenty years now. But, it was only in 2015 that the Swedish car maker bought out the tuning house. Taking things a step further, Volvo has confirmed that future products from Polestar will not feature the well-known "iron mark" insignia. That said, it will continue to provide "optimisation packages" (read: body kits and remaps) for your run-of-the-mill Volvos.

Heading the new brand will be Thomas Ingenlath who has been appointed as the CEO for Polestar. He will be joined by Jonathan Goodman who assumes office as the chief operating officer. “Polestar will be a credible competitor in the emerging global market for high performance electrified cars. With Polestar, we are able to offer electrified cars to the world’s most demanding, progressive drivers in all market segments,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars.
A separate performance division isn't something that's reinvented the wheel. BMW M and Mercedes-AMG already operate as individual entities under the umbrella of the manufacturer. Notably, Audi also recently moved its RS division under a new "Audi Sport" brand.
Volvo's approach to performance does pique interest though. On multiple occasions, the press release issued by the brand mentions "electrified high-performance cars". The manufacturer has already distanced itself from big, gas-guzzling V6s and V8s, in favour of twin-charged four-cylinder engines. We can only wait in anticipation to see what the mad hatters at Polestar serve up.
While we do that, we have the delectable Volvo S60 Polestar to ogle at. And yes, we've driven it. Here's the review.
